Creative Waldorf learning at Bambujaya takes place in our wholesome environment, surrounding our bilingual learners with nature, beauty and time to enjoy the outdoors. Together we learn, grow and explore Siem Reap, laying the foundation for our future!
Waldorf education was developed by Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and scientist, at the beginning of the 20th century.
Waldorf methods derive from an instructional model that recognises the specific developmental stages of the child. The Waldorf philosophy views education as an art, so each subject, whether mathematics, biology or English, is presented in a way that addresses the child’s developmental stage. Each subject is presented through direct experience and is often augmented with art, poetry, music and drama.
Bilingual Learning Through the Hands, Heart and Head
The curriculum at Bambujaya International School is a richly creative, developmentally appropriate blend of academic studies and all art forms. All subjects are taught in an experiential, artistic and intellectually stimulating way. We offer a comprehensive, fully-coordinated Waldorf curriculum, focused on honouring childhood and preparing children for a lifetime of learning.
Early Childhood Program
Throughout the early years, children carefully watch and imitate, so it is the optimal time to teach good habits and values that will last a lifetime. Children are interested in what adults are doing and want to have purposeful work themselves – they also need plenty of time to safely explore the world and develop a rich imagination. In later years, children combine their curiosity and compassion to better understand the world and offer solutions to problems.
Lower School
The elementary years are lively and active at Bambujaya with much of the learning delivered through stories and images, hands-on lessons and the daily creation of Main Lesson books. Stories are used to teach the alphabet and numbers in Grade 1 through to botany and Greek history in Grade 5. Tales of great deeds, ancient wisdom and cultural traditions combine with stories of animals, geography and mathematical processes to provide a solid academic foundation.
Middle School
In Middle School the curriculum evolves to accommodate the learner’s growing desire for integrity. At the same time, the curriculum seeks to keep alive the connection between the adolescent’s soul, and what they learn and create. As they discover their own strengths and talents, we help our Bambujaya learners to integrate their critical thinking, inner resources and imagination, as well as a sense of social responsibility.
“Our highest endeavour must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives.
The need for imagination, a sense of trust, and a feeling of responsibility–these three forces are the very nerve of education.”

To foster a deeper understanding and to build responsibility we include:
Creating With Purpose
Building on fine motor skills developed in Kindergarten, children in Grade 1 learn to knit and finger weave.
Nourishing our Bodies
Beginning with bread making and vegetable chopping in the early years, cookery is an important part of our learning experience.
Awakening the spirit
Music is an essential part of our Waldorf-inspired curriculum, beginning in the early years with song and dance.
Improving Our Focus
Movement is an essential component of our days, from our morning circles to classes in physical education and yoga.
Fostering Imagination
Drawing, painting and modelling are introduced in the Grade 1, using block crayons, watercolours and beeswax.
Connecting with Nature
On our established and natural campus there is ample space to implement our gardening programme.
Empowering every child to realise their reason for being.
